You’ve read about it…you’ve heard about it…and now you want to get in on it. The blogosphere is waiting for you! BUT…if you want to consider blogging as a means to build a customer base, make sure you understand what you are getting yourself into.

Bloggers have something to say and this is their conduit to communicate their ideas to the universe. They’ll welcome you if you’re on the up-and-up and send you down in flames if you’re trying to pull a fast one.

If you want to use the Internet to build your following, you have to be disciplined and passionate about communicating your message online. If you are doing this just for publicity, it will show and you’ll be rejected. If you are doing it without a purpose, it will show and you’ll be rejected. If you are not involved personally in communicating with your readers, it will show and you’ll be rejected.

In other words, do it right or don’t do it at all.

Effective Tips For Better Blogging

If you have the dedication and constituency to get your blog out there, post regularly and keep the relationships in the blogosphere going, you might see the fruits of your labour.

1. Do It the Easy Way.

Don’t get complicated with your blog. If you have to depend on someone to maintain it for you, make sure it’s someone you can count on. The moment the blog stops being fun, the moment your interest starts dwindling because posting is complicated…that’s the moment your blog starts to die.

2. Be Hard On Yourself.

Make sure you have the discipline to post at least twice a week if you want to create a disciplined following. Be consistent about when you post new info. If your posting schedule is all over the place, you stop being a reliable source of information and people are going to place their attention somewhere else.

3. Don’t Be A Bore.

People appreciate the written word, but in general are more entertained by more dynamic content. If possible, include video or audio when you get a chance. Most blogging platforms today can easily integrate content from YouTube or any video site.

4. Be A Collaborator.

You don’t have to be the author of all your blog postings. Collaborate with colleagues. This is a great opportunity for cross-promotion. “You write for me and I’ll write for you.”

5. Tag Like Your Blog Depended On It. (It does!)

Make sure to tag all your articles and entries. This will make it easier for the search engines to find you and can be used to navigate better on your own blog.

6. Unless You’re A Designer, Let A Pro Do It.

Even the tastiest morsels of information are hard to swallow when a blog looks dreadful. A badly designed blog has a negative impact on your credibility. It’s like showing up to work unwashed and in your old clothes. In most cases people will have a hard time getting to your message because your appearance is not consistent with it.

Unless you’ve got some graphics skills, use a professionally designed template if possible or hire somebody who knows his/her way around blog design.

Blogging is a great way to get traffic to your site. Search engines rank blogs high because the blogs are usually updated a lot and people generally love to read blogs. However, there are a few things you can do to get the most out of your blogs. Here are 4 steps to blogging right.

1. Blog Once a Day for at Least a Week

This is something you should make sure you do when you first start your blog. You want to post a new blog every single day for at least the first seven days. This will let the search engines see that the blog is constantly updated and it will give you a higher search engine ranking.

2. Anchor Text

Anchoring text is when you put a link with a word or a phrase. Then the word or phrase appears as a hyperlink that can be clicked on by the reader. The reader will then be brought to wherever the link leads. Here’s an example:

<a href=”http://www.yoursite.com” > anchor text goes here </a>

You should always take a keyword or phrase and sprinkle it in your blog. Then anchor those words or phrases back to your site. This will help get you more direct traffic from your blog and it will also help the linked site rank well with the search engines for the keywords or phrases you’ve anchored.

3. Social Bookmarking

There are many social bookmarking sites on the Internet that you should bookmark your site on. Every time you write a new post, make sure you bookmark it. This will give you more backlinks to your blog (which will help with the search engine ranking) and it will also get you some traffic directly from the bookmarking sites.

Some of the most popular bookmarking sites include Digg.com, StumbleUpon.com, and Reddit.com.

4. Include Call to Action

This seems like a no-brainer but more than a few people forget to do this on their blogs. Include a call to action on the blog itself, in the side bar. If the individual blog post lends itself to it, also include a call to action right in the blog post.

If you don’t ask someone to go to your site then no one is going to go there. So make sure you always include a call to action.

4 steps to blogging right are to blog once a day for at least a week, anchor text in your blog, bookmark every new blog post, and include a call to action on your blog and with individual blog posts. If you do these 4 things then you will be successful with getting traffic to your main site from your blogging site.

In order to make money online by blogging there are two schools of thought as to when the best time is to monetize the blog. On the one hand you could immediately start to market to your readers upon launch. Now this makes sense since earning an online income is why you’ve started the blog to begin with. On the other hand there are those who feel it is best to first establish a reader base before introducing any type of online marketing techniques.

On the surface it would seem pretty obvious as to what approach to take if earning an online income is the objective behind your blogging.

Well even though managing a blog over a period of time without the intent to make money seems a little strange it does pose some interesting advantages.

Let’s have a look at 3 compelling reasons it would be to your advantage to DELAY monetizing your blog:

EASIER TO CREATE ‘COMMUNITY’

The very basis behind blog popularity is the ability to interact with other visitors and the site owner WITHOUT the distractions of online advertising. Freedom from sales pitches and the opportunity to contribute concerning content of interest to the reader is what most visitors expect at a blog.

Online advertising of any kind will hinder that ‘cozy’ and ‘protected’ feeling visitors are expecting from a blog. As a result it may slow the growth of blog readership since many may not feel as comfortable with these distractions.

EASIER to DEVELOP LOYALTY

With good content and the implementation of effective online marketing techniques to attract traffic most blogs can expect to grow quickly. The interaction of both readers and the site owner through blog comments left and also responded to a certain degree of familiarity develops. This spawns a feeling of camaraderie and loyalty between and amongst all participants. This loyalty then results in readers returning and in fact with their continued participation they in effect are helping to build and improve the blog.

At this point the feeling of community is in full bloom and continues to feed upon itself to grow the blog even more. Now you have greater participation, more input, and even referrals from the existing subscription base are arriving. It is of utmost importance that the site owner continues to take advantage of blog comments left and act upon them to improve the blog. These comments are the readers telling you what they want; all you need to do is respond.

ENHANCES FUTURE MARKETING EFFORTS

This communal feeling and the loyalty that now exist has given the blog owner tremendous momentum upon which to launch a money making blog. Readership resistance to any marketing attempts will be minimized due to the trust that has developed. In fact sales conversions should be very high as also should be profits.

Blog marketing relies upon the trust and familiarity that the blogging community is noted for. A blog not monetized will generally gain a greater and more immediate acceptance amongst visitors thereby leading to a faster growth rate.

To make money online it will always involves a certain amount of trust from your customers. In order for them to respond positively to any online marketing efforts they’ll need to believe in either you or the product. By not monetizing your blog from the outset you should be able to develop this trust quicker. This will in turn lead to greater sales with less effort in the future.
